My name is Iain Hoey (as you may have already gleaned from this website’s url) and I’m an Editor / Writer / Journalist / insert-other-similar-title-here.

I’ve been working in B2B magazines since 2016 and eventually decided it was time to have a website that exists outside that particular ecosystem and isn’t just my LinkedIn profile. LinkedIn is excellent for connecting with the people I need to speak to, but it doesn’t always feel like the right place to put everything in one spot. So, here we are.

Current role
I am Editor of both International Fire & Safety Journal and Fire & Safety Journal Americas at Centurian Media. In practice that means I lead editorial strategy and act as the decision-maker across print, digital, newsletter and social channels. I have overseen the production of 22 magazines a year (anywhere from 72 to 192 pages). I plan and commission content, write and edit news and features, conduct interviews, manage the websites, and work closely with the commercial and design teams.
I also played a central part in launching and developing the Americas title, adapting processes and building coverage for a new regional market. Alongside the magazines I’ve helped grow the LinkedIn audience substantially, launched the LinkedIn newsletter, trained a junior colleague, and developed practical AI-supported workflows that improve efficiency without lowering standards.
Background
I started in publishing in 2016 as an Editorial Assistant at 55North. In 2017 I became Editor of Retail Destination, a specialist B2B title covering the retail and commercial property sectors, and stayed in that role until 2022 (first as an employee, later continuing on a freelance basis). I took over International Fire & Safety Journal in 2022 and added Fire & Safety Journal Americas in 2024.
I hold a BA (Hons) English Literature (First Class) and a Master of Publishing Studies (Merit), both from the University of Stirling.
What the work actually looks like
The pieces I return to most often, and that feel most characteristic of what I do, are taking dense technical, regulatory or scientific material and turning it into clear, accurate content that professional readers can actually use. I also do long-form interviews and conversations with senior figures — CEOs, managing directors, fire service leaders, engineers, researchers, association executives and government representatives.
A substantial part of the work involves explanatory and investigative pieces on complex public-interest subjects such as building safety reform after Grenfell, personal evacuation plans, wildfire management, lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle risks, PFAS and firefighting foam, firefighter health, and related regulatory change. Alongside that sits high-volume news and sector reporting produced under deadline while keeping accuracy and neutrality intact.
Approach
What matters most is that the story is accurate and useful. I try to understand a subject properly before writing about it. I present different perspectives without distortion and make complex material clear enough that a professional reader can do something with it. I take a solutions-focused approach: first establish what the problem is, then look at what is being done about it. I check back with sources when something might cause difficulty, treat off-record information carefully and avoid both promotional language and unsupported claims. Neutrality and precision matter, especially on contested or sensitive topics.
